Teeth Whitening at South Yarra Orthodontics
Thinking about a brighter smile? Our team can assess whether teeth whitening suits you and talk you through the options.
Whitening options
- In-chair whitening: done in the practice, under supervision.
- Take-home whitening: custom-fitted trays with whitening gel to use at home, following our instructions.
Important things to know
1. Is whitening right for me?
Whitening isn’t suitable for everyone. Results depend on the type of staining, your existing dental work (crowns, veneers and fillings don’t whiten), and how sensitive your teeth are. We’ll look at your teeth and gums first, then recommend an option that suits you.
2. What to expect
- Results vary from person to person and fade over time.
- Some people get temporary tooth sensitivity or gum irritation during or after whitening.
- During treatment, avoid foods and drinks that could stain your teeth—including coffee, red wine and tobacco—and avoid very hot or cold foods and drinks if they cause sensitivity.
- In-chair Zoom whitening should generally not be performed more frequently than once every 12 months
- Following in-chair Zoom whitening, a take-home whitening kit may be recommended for ongoing maintenance.
3. Preparation is key
For the best experience, we recommend a dental clean within the past 6 months, prior to whitening treatment. Use sensitive toothpaste for 3 days prior and take ibuprofen before the procedure.
