Today, modern braces are the result of technological advancements in dental materials, which allow for the fabrication of much smaller braces and a faster treatment process.
Traditional braces have been around for a long time, meaning they have been thoroughly and meticulously clinically tried and tested. This has resulted in the technology becoming quite affordable.
When compared to more cosmetically driven treatments, traditional braces usually come in as the most cost effective option. This can be a welcomed relief for families with younger members who have orthodontic issues or concerns and for anyone who is looking for the most cost effective option to fix significant orthodontic problems.
Here at South Yarra Orthodontics in Melbourne, we offer both metal braces and ceramic braces for a more discreet teeth-straightening option.
How do braces work?
Full or partial braces can be used to treat a wide range of orthodontic concerns, including correcting one or a few crooked teeth or to fix an entire mouth of issues. Traditional braces have a few different components that all wok in sync to move your teeth dramatically, in a relatively short amount of time.
The three main components of traditional braces include:
- Brackets: Brackets are the ”handle” into which wires are inserted, to enable tooth movement. They are small squares that are bonded to the front of your teeth that hold the archwire in place. Brackets can be made of metal (silver) or ceramic (tooth coloured) materials.
- Archwire: This strong u-shaped wire will slide into the grooves of the brackets and will guide the movement of your teeth.
- O-rings: These archwires are held to the bracket with the use of coloured/plain elastic rings (modules).
What are ceramic braces?
Ceramic braces work exactly like traditional metal braces with the only difference being the brackets are made from a very fine translucent, tooth-coloured porcelain that makes the braces almost invisible. Ceramic braces are a great cosmetic alternative to traditional metal braces as these brackets blend in with your natural tooth coloured creating a less obvious appearance.
As ceramic braces utilise the same technology as their traditional metal counterparts, they lend themselves well to achieving the fine detailing metal braces are known for with a little more discretion. With proper cleaning and a great oral hygiene routine, ceramic braces don’t stain as often as many patients think.
Ceramic braces are frequently used on teenagers and adults who have cosmetic concerns. They do however, require more attention than traditional braces, as they are a little more brittle and can stain more easily.
