More and more adults are benefiting from modern orthodontic treatments.
If you would like to improve both the function and appearance of your smile, you might consider orthodontic treatment. More and more adults are choosing to undergo orthodontic treatment, and it’s easy to see why — results are often achieved effectively, and a broad range of issues can be addressed. So, what are the options exactly? And what does the treatment involve? Read on to find out more about adult orthodontics, and which treatment best suits you…
What treatments are available?
There are a number of orthodontic treatments that are suitable for adult patients, each of which has its own benefits.
Traditional metal braces remain a popular choice because they can resolve a range of issues, including complex orthodontic problems. Modern braces are much less bulky than they used to be and are also more comfortable than they once were. Braces involve the use of three main components, all of which work together to move your teeth in a relatively short amount of time. These components are brackets, which are bonded to the teeth; archwires, which guide the movement of the teeth; and o-rings, which are attached to the brackets.
For those who would like to get braces, but would prefer a more discreet treatment, ceramic braces are often a good option. Ceramic braces work exactly like metal braces but the brackets are made from fine, translucent porcelain —this makes them an aesthetically appealing alternative to traditional braces.
Lingual braces are also an effective treatment for adults. They work in a similar way to traditional braces, except that the brackets are attached to the back side of the teeth. This means that they are virtually invisible. Another advantage of lingual braces is that they prevent visible decalcification, which can affect the visible side of the teeth if proper oral hygiene is not practiced during orthodontic treatment.
Another popular treatment, clear aligners like Invisalign, involve the use of plastic trays that are switched out every two weeks or so. These aligners work by applying constant pressure to the teeth, gradually forcing them to move into new positions over time. Clear aligners are a discreet treatment, and are convenient because they can be removed for eating, drinking, brushing and flossing.
How do you choose?
The orthodontic treatment that is right for you will depend on a number of factors. It is advisable that you discuss your specific needs and goals with your orthodontist in detail so that they can help tailor a treatment that will work for your lifestyle. When you go for your initial consultation, be sure to raise any questions or concerns that you have so that these can be addressed before you go ahead with your treatment. It’s always a good idea to discuss how long you can expect your treatment of choice to take, as well as any lifestyle or dietary changes that you might have to make.
