Besides teeth, what’s an integral part of your smile? Your lips! But did you know that the skin on our lips is much thinner and more sensitive than the skin on the rest of our bodies? This makes our lips so much more prone to damage, especially from harsh seasonal elements of the sun or the cold.

So, for the sake of a gorgeous smile, it’s very important to take extra good care of our lips. As we’re in the midst of summer, now is the best time to start paying attention to a solid lip protection routine.

Here are our top 5 tips for how to protect your lips naturally

1. Keep your lips moisturised

It’s easy to neglect moisturising your lips, but so important! Lips can very easily become dry enough to get flaky and crack, yikes! In order to avoid that, make sure you’re using a good lip moisturiser or lip balm on a regular basis, we’re talking every 2 hours!

2. Use lip protection

Just like your eyes and your skin in the summer (and even the winter cold), your lips need protection from the elements too. Make sure that you’re always wearing a good SPF on your lips! A ton of lip balms have SPF incorporated into them, check the labels!

3. Stay hydrated

Hydration is always key! Drinking enough water is essential for your lips to stay soft and healthy. Just like your skin, your lips need to be hydrated from the inside out. Even more so because lips don’t contain oil glands like the rest of our skin.

4. Exfoliate your lips

Scrub your lips, especially if they’re starting to dry out. This helps get rid of dead skin cells and keep your lips smooth. Removing dead skin also helps to prevent infection. There are a ton of gentle lip scrubs available, but you can also make your own with sugar and honey!

5. Always remove your makeup

This one’s for those who wear makeup. Make sure you always remove it at the end of the day! Neglecting to remove your makeup is a recipe for dry, worn-out lips. Let your lips breathe with a clear face.

Keep it simple! Just like brushing and flossing, lip care is important but easy as pie. Incorporate these tips into your daily routine and you should have lovely lips to complete your smile!
