Invisalign can take anywhere between six months to two years to achieve results.

Invisalign is an increasingly popular treatment and an effective option for those who would like to straighten their teeth without the need for traditional metal braces. The treatment involves the use of removable aligners that fit over your teeth and can be removed for eating, drinking and cleaning. But how long does Invisalign take? That depends on the severity of your case. Most people will need to wear Invisalign for about 12 months, but it could be as short as six or as long as 18 months, depending on your particular needs and concerns. It is advisable that you talk to your orthodontist to get an idea of how long you will need to wear Invisalign.

How long does Invisalign take?

Although each patient is different, it usually takes less than two years for Invisalign to achieve results. In some cases, the treatment can take as little as six months. It is important to understand that the exact duration of your treatment will depend on a number of factors, including the complexity of your orthodontic concern, as well as your aesthetic goals. When your orthodontist puts together your treatment plan, they will let you know how long you can expect to wear your aligners for.

What affects the treatment time?

There are a few factors that can impact the duration of your Invisalign treatment. The type of orthodontic issues that you are struggling with, for example, will have a direct impact on the length of your treatment — Invisalign is often an effective option for a range of issues, including underbite, overbite, crowding and gaps between the teeth. The more complex your concern, the longer you can expect your treatment to take.

Your age will also influence the length of your treatment. Although teeth can be straightened at any age, it is important to note that younger teeth and jaws are usually easier and quicker to align. If you choose to undergo orthodontic treatment at a later stage in life, you may need to wear your aligners for longer than our younger patients.

Another factor that can impact the length of your treatment is your own compliance — clear aligners should be worn for 20 to 22 hours every day, and removed only for eating, drinking, brushing, flossing and cleaning. You should also move onto the next set of aligners according to your orthodontist’s instructions — your treatment will be planned carefully, and by sticking to this plan, you can prevent delays and ensure that your teeth are moving as they should. If you have any questions about your treatment plan or when to switch your aligners, be sure to raise them with your orthodontist.

How does Invisalign work?

Invisalign involves the use of a series of plastic trays that are custom-made to fit comfortably and securely. They work by applying pressure on the teeth, which forces them to move into better positions over the course of time.

Every two weeks or so, you will need to swap your aligners for a new set. This will ensure that your teeth are shifting according to your treatment plan, and that you achieve your desired results.
