One of the technologies we’re very fond of and use a lot, is the Itero Intra – Oral Scanner.

This scanner provides comprehensive images of a patient’s mouth, without the need for traditional dental impressions.

This scanner has been a blessing for patients who aren’t a fan of having their mouth and surveyed for a long time as the dentist works their way around their mouth. For patients who have a gag reflex, this has proven to be a better option for them as well. The scanner captures the shape of your teeth and bite without needing dental impressions. The scanning process takes 5 to 10 minutes and can scan your whole mouth, top and bottom all in one go. The scans are then taken to a lab to be examined and if need be an individual appliance is created accordingly.

As times evolve and we get the opportunity to integrate new technologies into our practices, it’s imperative that we are well trained and can facilitate these procedures successfully. The staff at South Yarra Orthodontics has been extensively trained in operating and performing scans.

What other technologies have been introduced into the dentistry field?

Think braces to straighten your teeth but more on the clear side offering you a discreet and more modern look. Invisalign is created using a clear, BPA free custom-made aligner to gradually move your teeth into the desired position. This treatment is great for adults who need their appearance to be discreet.

A scan of your teeth will determine just how long you will need to wear your new clear friends. The aligners are worn 24 hours daily, every day your teeth slightly move into the desired position. What are the benefits of this treatment:

  • Less pain and discomfort
  • You can still enjoy your favourite meals
  • You have an improved oral health status and better hygiene
  • You get to straighten your teeth at your own discretion
  • You spend less time at the orthodontist
  • You see the results easily
  • The aligners can be removed for special events

Invisalign fun fact: this technology was created by Zia Chishti along with his business partner Kelsey Wirth in 1997. Their goal was to create a more sophisticated dental tool. It became available to dentists and orthodontists in 1999. This has proven to be a great tool for dental professionals to use delivering great results

The electronic toothbrush

Electric toothbrushes have been proven better at cleaning your teeth, this technology took over from the manual one many years ago but has been widely accepted and seen as a better tool compared to its counterpart. A lot of dental professionals have endorsed the usage of this tool.  Here are some benefits of this dental technology:

Better cleaning. The bristles of this toothbrush are designed to remove plaque for you as they move in a certain motion. It can also reach places you and your hand can’t reach. It reaches deep into your gums and in the back part of your mouth where bacteria tend to clog up resulting in gum disease or tooth decay.

Defeats bad breathe. The common reason for bad breath is poor oral hygiene. Sometimes even if you brush your teeth the correct amount of times in a day, you still don’t remove all food particles or bacteria that can get stuck in deep places or in between your teeth and gums. This can result in bad breath. Your electronic whizz can go into all those places your manual toothbrush can’t reach.

Prevents you from brushing too hard. Brushing too hard can cause serious gum injuries, causing them to bleed and recede. Your electronic toothbrush stops you from doing that as it moves at a certain speed designed to effectively remove all plaque.

Electronic toothbrush fun fact: the first electronic toothbrush was produced by the Electro Massage Tooth Brush Company in Switzerland. In 1954 a Dr Phillipe Guy Woong invented what they called the Broxodent. These were initially created for patients with limited motor skills and those with braces
