To date, Invisalign is one of the most remarkable breakthroughs in discreet orthodontic treatment
From a Darwinian perspective, having a good set of teeth is a good indication of your health. Your teeth can show if you smoke, if you drink, your diet and even the health of your entire body. Having healthy, straight teeth makes it much easier to floss, brush and keep your teeth clean throughout the day.
Straight teeth can also help to reduce your risk of tooth decay and gum disease and keep your natural teeth as you get older.
A question our South Yarra Orthodontics team often gets asked by our patients is, ‘what is Invisalign?’
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is one of the most popular ways to straighten your teeth almost invisibly, yet effectively too. Invisalign consists of a number of clear, BPA-free plastic aligners that move each individual tooth to create a beautiful, seamless smile.
What’s involved in the Invisalign treatment?
One of the main benefits of the Invisalign treatment is the use of advanced 3D computer imaging technology to show the complete treatment plan from start to finish. This means that you can see your finished smile even before you undergo treatment. These scans will be taken from the initial position of your teeth and Dr Theresia Sudjalim will then show you the desired result she wants to achieve.
From these 3D images, a series of custom-made aligners will be created to apply gentle pressure to your smile. Every time you visit South Yarra Orthodontics, you will receive a few new sets of aligners and you will need to replace your aligners approximately every two weeks. The treatment time and the number of aligners you receive throughout your treatment will depend on a few factors, which include your current tooth alignment and your age. Patients are advised to wear their aligners for at least 22 hours a day. Generally, patients will wear their aligners for around 12 months to see amazing results.
What are the benefits of Invisalign?
Aside from the obvious aesthetic benefits, Invisalign has a number of other benefits, including:
Removable: They are removable, so eating and drinking your favourite foods isn’t a problem.
Easy to clean: Compared to other orthodontic appliances like traditional braces, the removable aligners mean you can brush and floss like normal. So, there’s no excuse not to keep your oral hygiene in tip-top shape!
Comfortable: Because the aligners are made from a smooth BPA-free plastic and are moulded to your teeth every two weeks, they sit comfortably and seamlessly on to your teeth.
Less risk: There needs to be a relatively strong amount of force to move your adult teeth. One of the main problems that arise from moving teeth with traditional metal brackets, is root resorption. This happens when the tooth root breaks down, often resulting in tooth loss. Because Invisalign aligners exert a strong, yet gradual force onto each tooth, the risk of root resorption is minimised.
Safer on your teeth: Sometimes, when metal braces are removed from patients’ teeth, some of the precious tooth enamel can detach. Invisalign doesn’t use any dental glue to bond brackets to the teeth, so enamel scouring isn’t an issue.
