Lingual braces and Invisalign each have pros and cons when it comes to your orthodontic care.
What are lingual braces?
Incognito lingual braces are the latest advancements in lingual braces that are attached to the inner surfaces of the teeth. The Incognito lingual braces are customised to fit your teeth and fix your unique issues.
How are Incognito braces bonded?
Incognito braces are bonded in the same fashion that regular braces are bonded. They consist of customised brackets that fit the shape of the teeth precisely using CAD/CAM rapid prototyping and robotic technology. Once the brackets are made they are cemented to the back of the teeth. The orthodontist will create a mock-up of what your teeth should look like after wearing braces. A dental lab will create brackets and wires based on the details of the impression.
What are the advantages to lingual braces?
The most obvious advantage to lingual braces is that they are extremely discreet; they are practically unnoticeable unless someone takes a close look at your mouth very few people will even recognise you are wearing braces.
Incognito braces are customised to fit the exact shape of the teeth, therefore they are much more comfortable in the mouth and are more specialised in treating your specific dental issue.
What are the disadvantages of lingual braces?
Lingual braces are often more expensive than regular braces due to the fact that the brackets are custom made to your teeth, whereas traditional braces are stock fitted. They require specific skills and training from your orthodontist in order to fit and apply Incognito braces. At South Yarra Orthodontics we have qualified professionals who are trained to apply your Incognito braces.
Incognito braces are still braces and not retainers, certain foods that are hard, chewy and crunchy can dislodge one of the brackets. If a bracket does get dislodged, they are custom-made, we will need to organise a replacement which could extend the length of your treatment time.
The Incognito braces are placed behind the teeth, if the food particles are caught in the brackets or wires, they will be difficult to see and locate. It is much more difficult to clean hidden areas that need attention. Our friendly staff will instruct you on the care of your braces on the day of bonding.
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is clear aligner therapy that straightens the teeth and creates a convenient course of treatment for every lifestyle.
What are the advantages to Invisalign?
Invisalign has many of the same advantages as lingual braces when it comes to discretion and appearance. However, the defining difference is that the retainers are removable and so there are fewer restrictions on food and drink as well as maintenance. Because the retainers are removable you are able to eat and drink what you wish and still maintain your oral hygiene as one normally would.
What are the disadvantages to Invisalign?
Invisalign treatment is dependent on your compliance to be successful. As much as the retainers are removable, the less time they spend in the mouth the more ineffective they are. Therefore, patients need to be disciplined in wearing them for at least 22 hours a day and still remember to put them back in after a meal or brushing your teeth.
