What are lingual braces?

Lingual Braces, the invisible alternative to conventional braces

Lingual braces have become a popular option for many patients who require orthodontic treatment but want an option that isn’t visible. By undergoing orthodontic treatment with lingual braces, you can achieve results in the same time as traditional metal braces.

Not only are lingual braces an excellent option for patients wanting a more discreet orthodontic option, but they are also an excellent choice for patients who play contact sport or a musical instrument and want to continue to play during orthodontic treatment.

How do they work?

Like conventional braces, lingual braces still use the same brackets and wires which apply a gentle pressure to the teeth to encourage them to move. They are attached to the inside of the upper and lower teeth and are required to be permanently attached until completion of treatment when the teeth are in their optimal position.

Here at South Yarra Orthodontics, Dr Sudjalim uses the Incognito Braces System to provide lingual braces. The system involves the use of hand-made gold coated braces. This ensures that the treatment is the most comfortable, precise and accurate.

Benefits of Lingual Braces

Lingual braces have a few benefits that can outweigh the other options of visible traditional braces. These benefits include:

  • Well hidden – Since these braces are placed behind your teeth, you can continue to smile like normal during the whole treatment process and no one will know that you are undergoing orthodontic treatment.
  • Comfortable – As they are positioned behind your teeth, there is less contact with soft tissues in the mouth which is usually affected by traditional braces. No more biting your inside lip.
  • Progress of results – With lingual braces, you can see the results as they occur and there is no need to have to wait until the braces have been removed at the end of the treatment.
  • Customisation – Every appliance is individually designed and created using the latest technology to achieve the optimum result.
